An LED wall panel is a three-dimensional wall panel with lighting designed into it, so the wall itself becomes a soft light source rather than a fixture bolted on top. That is what Kandes makes: a solid gypsum relief with the light built in. The complication is that two other, quite different products are also sold under the phrase "LED wall panels", and Kandes makes neither of them: a plain surface with a stick-on LED strip added behind it, and a flat backlit acrylic or plastic light panel. All three look alike in a thumbnail and behave very differently on a real wall. This guide keeps the three separate, so you can see how a Kandes 3D gypsum panel compares with the strip kits and plastic light panels you meet under the same search.

Table of contents

What are LED wall panels?

An LED wall panel is a relief wall panel that carries its own lighting, so the light and the texture are read together as one surface. The point is not brightness. It is the way a raking light travels across a three-dimensional pattern, deepening every ridge and hollow and turning a flat wall into something that changes through the evening.

Three products get grouped under the same search term, and it helps to separate them before you buy. The first is the integrated-light panel, and it is the only one of the three that Kandes makes: the light is designed into a solid gypsum relief and the two are supplied as one piece. The other two are not Kandes products, but they are worth understanding because they are the usual alternatives to a gypsum panel. One is the stick-on LED strip kit, a plain board or bare wall with an adhesive strip added behind or beneath it, bought as separate parts. The other is the backlit acrylic or plastic light panel, a flat sheet lit from behind, closer to a light box than to wall relief. All three can look good in the right place; they simply solve different problems, and the rest of this guide is about the first.

LED wall panels vs LED strips vs backlit acrylic

The honest way to choose is to compare how each option is built, not how it photographs. Only the first column below is a Kandes product: the integrated-light gypsum panel. The other two columns are the alternatives it is usually weighed against, shown here for comparison. A strip kit is flexible and cheap and works on almost any surface, but the effect depends entirely on the surface you stick it to. A backlit acrylic panel gives an even, glowing sheet, but the substrate is plastic. The table below sets the three side by side.

A Kandes gypsum panel (column 1) vs two other products sold as "LED wall panels"
Consideration Kandes integrated-light gypsum panel Stick-on LED strip kit Backlit acrylic / plastic panel
How the light works Light is designed into the panel and grazes a moulded relief A separate adhesive strip lights whatever surface it is fixed to A flat sheet lit evenly from behind, like a light box
The surface Three-dimensional gypsum relief with real depth None of its own; you supply the wall or board Flat, usually printed or frosted
Finish and colour Painted on site in any colour you choose Fixed to the host surface's finish Set by the sheet; not repaintable
Fire behaviour Panel material classified A1 (EN 13501-1), non-combustible Depends entirely on the surface it is stuck to Plastic substrate is combustible and adds fire load
Feel and longevity Solid mineral wall finish, repaintable for years Consumable; strips are periodically replaced Plastic that can yellow or scratch over time
Best suited to A permanent, designed feature wall Quick accents, shelving, temporary schemes Signage, bars, backlit graphics

The reaction-to-fire point is the one most buyers overlook. Under the European standard EN 13501-1, construction products are classed from A1 down to F, and A1 is the top class: a material that does not contribute to a fire (EN 13501-1 classes explained). Reaching A1 means passing the non-combustibility test EN ISO 1182, with a temperature rise of no more than a few degrees and no sustained flaming (how A1 is verified). Gypsum is a mineral that behaves this way by nature (about gypsum); a plastic light panel cannot make the same claim.

How Kandes builds LED into a panel: five methods

There is no single "LED panel" mechanism at Kandes, and that matters when you compare products. Light is integrated one of five ways depending on the panel family, and the right choice depends on the look you want and how the wall will be built. Kandes is a producer that holds stock of every catalogue model and sells directly through kandes.eu and through a curated network of design distributors, so any of these families can be specified from the start.

  • A channel in the panel body. SLATE, FUTUR, and HEXAGON carry the LED in a channel moulded into the panel itself. The light seats flush in the gypsum and the panel ships ready to wire.
  • A strip built into the back. GEON and the LED versions of COSMIC have the light strip built into the back of the panel at production, with no aluminium profile involved. Light spills around the edges for a soft halo on the wall behind. On these families the strip is built in at production and forms part of the LED variant as shipped, not a separate channel and not a retrofit.
  • An optional strip on the back. AQUA and CURVE can be installed with or without light. If you want it lit, an LED strip is fitted to the back at install time, so the same shape works either way.
  • A separate aluminium profile. CASCADE, GRID, and LIGNEO take light through a dedicated Kandes aluminium profile and a strip or small projector, cut to length and installed alongside the panel rather than embedded in it.
  • Light in one element of a set. TRINITY is a set: three patterned square panels that stay unlit, plus a triangular element with the LED built in, so the glow is a deliberate accent within the composition.

Because the method differs by family, it is worth deciding the effect first, the halo of a strip-on-the-back panel or the crisp line of a moulded channel, and letting that steer the model. You can browse the lit models together in the LED panel collection, and the GEON panel is a good starting point for the soft, edge-lit look.

Colour temperature and control: what to specify

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and it changes the mood of a lit wall more than any other single setting (kelvin explained). Lower numbers read warm and amber; higher numbers read cool and daylight-like, which is why designers match the temperature to the room's purpose (a room-by-room guide).

Every integrated-LED Kandes panel ships at 6000K as standard, a clean cool-daylight white. If you want a warmer or a tunable scheme, 3000K, 4000K, and full RGB are available on request, so the same panel can throw a soft warm glow in a bedroom or shift colour in a media room. Because each panel is painted on site in the colour you choose, the light always grazes a finished surface, and the relief and the paint carry the effect together. These panels are produced in Europe, and the light components are chosen to a consistent standard across the range.

Where LED wall panels work best

The strongest use is a single, considered feature wall rather than lighting a whole room. Behind a bed, a low warm setting turns a headboard wall into something calm; you can see the idea developed in our guide to a bedroom feature wall. Behind a television or a media unit, a lit relief softens the black rectangle and reduces the contrast your eye fights in a dark room. In an entrance or a hallway, a grazing light gives a small space depth it would not otherwise have.

In hospitality and retail the same panels earn their place at reception desks, behind bars, and in lounges, where the A1 material classification and the painted-to-brief finish both matter for a commercial fit-out. For a more technical read on specifying integrated light, our specifier guide to LED-integrated panels goes deeper, and the gaming-wall comparison looks at the same choice from an entertainment-room angle.

Kandes is a Swiss brand, and the design intent behind these families is to make light a material choice rather than an accessory, part of the wall from the first sketch. Seen that way, an LED wall panel is less a lighting product than a surface that happens to glow, which is exactly the point of specifying one. The full range, lit and unlit, sits in the wider catalogue, with the geometric families gathered in the geometric collection.

FAQ

Are LED wall panels better than LED strips?

For a permanent feature wall, an integrated-light panel like a Kandes gypsum panel is usually the better choice, because the light and the relief are designed as one piece rather than a strip added behind a plain board. A stick-on strip kit, which is a different product, is cheaper and more flexible, and ideal for quick accents or temporary schemes. If you want a wall that looks finished and holds up for years, the integrated gypsum panel wins on build and finish.

What colour is the light in an LED wall panel?

Kandes integrated-LED panels ship at 6000K, a cool daylight white, as standard. Warmer 3000K, neutral 4000K, and full RGB are available on request, so you can tune the mood to the room. Warm settings suit bedrooms and lounges, while cooler light reads crisper in work and display spaces.

Can any 3D wall panel have LED?

Not every panel has LED built into it, but almost any panel wall can still be lit. At Kandes the families designed with integrated light are SLATE, FUTUR, HEXAGON, GEON, COSMIC, AQUA, CURVE, CASCADE, GRID, LIGNEO, and TRINITY. A panel with no built-in LED — where light was not part of its design — can still be lit around the composition instead: a perimeter LED profile can frame the whole panel, or concealed light from the ceiling, floor, or a side reveal can graze across the relief. Plan the lighting together with the wall, and have a qualified electrician make the final connection.

Do LED wall panels need an electrician?

Yes. The LED elements connect to mains power, so a qualified electrician should make the final electrical connection, while a tiler or drywaller installs the panels themselves. Kandes advises professional installation for a clean result; the steps and substrate notes are set out in the installation and maintenance guide.

What is the fire classification of LED wall panels?

The Kandes gypsum panel is classified A1 (EN 13501-1), the highest European reaction-to-fire class, meaning the panel material is non-combustible (EN 13501 overview). Plastic-based light panels cannot claim that. The LED fitting is a separate electrical component with its own rating, so a compliant install pairs the non-combustible panel with correctly specified wiring.
